Cheddar, Wells and
Midsomer Norton
The single most popular cheese in the world, according to
that foremost of cheese authorities, the Monty Python Cheese Shop sketch of
1972, is Cheddar, so we felt obliged to drop in there for a couple of nights on
our way to Sussex to stay with friends. Penny found a very nice B&B in an
old police house in Cheddar, named The Old Police House. It’s located right
near the gorge, within easy walking distance of the many shops, pubs,
restaurants at the base of the Cheddar Gorge, a magnet for walkers and bike
riders. There are numerous shops selling cheese, some claiming to be the
original, others claiming to be the last real local Cheddar cheese makers, and
so on. Very neat place and being in Somerset, home to a lot of cider also.
We made some side trips to Wells, to see the Cathedral and
Bishops House – both major historical buildings, a trip to Glastonbury to see the
Tor (foiled by traffic chaos due to road works, so only glimpsed in passing),
and home via Midsomer Norton, just because of the name. I don’t think it has
anything to do with the TV murder series, but it is also a nice place set in
picturesque countryside.
