Castle Howard
Not far from Whitby are two significant but very different
historic buildings.
Castle Howard was the home where Anne Boleyn and her sister
lived before being married off to Henry 8th. It was used as the home
in the most recent film version of Brideshead Revisited, and is a suitably
grand place - beautiful gardens
surrounding an enormous house, featuring an entry with a large dome, similar to
a cathedral dome and was apparently the first private house in England to boast
one. The dome was destroyed by fire during WW2, but has been beautifully
rebuilt and repainted based on photos of the original ceiling.

Rievaulx Abbey
After the luxury of Castle Howard, we visited the ruins of
Rievaulx Abbey – a pious paradise in its day, housing happy monks farming and
brewing. They survived attacks and pillaging from the marauding Scots, but like
all of the monasteries, eventually became a victim of Henry 8th and
the Dissolution. The buildings of these monasteries decayed rapidly after Henry
8th took all of the lead from their roofs and gutters, and sold it
to bolster the royal income. Situated in an idyllic small river valley, it must
have been a very impressive building in its heyday.
